Spring cleaning the smart way

Guest Blog: We’ve invited sustainable cleaning brand Miniml to talk us through some top tips for a smarter, greener spring clean.

Spring offers the perfect excuse to open the windows, shake out the dust, and give your home the reset it deserves. But beyond decluttering and surface polishing, a modern spring clean is about more than just what you remove—it’s also about what you choose to bring into your home.

At Miniml, we believe spring cleaning is an opportunity to rethink your routine, embrace safer, natural cleaning methods, and make simple swaps that are better for your home, your health, and the planet. Whether you’ve just moved into your new home or are ready to refresh your space, here are our top tips for a smarter, greener spring clean.

Clean with the air, not against it

One of the simplest and most powerful things you can do this spring? Let the outside in. Opening your windows each day - even for just 10 minutes - can significantly improve air quality by circulating out indoor pollutants and moisture.

Tip: Plan your deep clean on a mild day. Open windows wide while dusting or vacuuming to keep allergens and particles from becoming trapped indoors.

Don’t just declutter - detox

Spring is the ideal time to part with items that no longer serve you, but it’s also a great time to review what’s under your sink. Many households store a mix of half-used bottles that contain harsh, outdated chemicals. These may contribute to indoor air pollution and unnecessary plastic waste.

Tip: Dispose of old or expired cleaning products safely through local waste facilities. Replace them with multi-surface, refillable solutions to reduce clutter and environmental impact.

Tackle the overlooked zones

We all know the usual spring clean checklist - dust the skirting boards, flip the mattress - but don’t forget the often-missed areas that gather dust, allergens, and hidden grime:

  • Top of kitchen cabinets and extractor fans
  • Behind radiators and large appliances
  • Inside window tracks and door frames
  • Curtains, blinds, and lampshades

Tip: Use a damp cloth or microfiber duster to trap dust, rather than spreading it around with dry wiping.

Ditch single-use for long-term wins

Paper towels and disposable wipes are convenient—but they add up. Not just in cost, but in waste. Switching to reusable cloths and washable mop heads can make a noticeable difference over time.

Tip: Even old clothes can be used as cleaning cloths! Instead of binning a worn-out t-shirt, wash it, and cut it into smaller pieces to use for every-day clean-ups.

Be smart with antibacterials

In recent years, many homes have increased use of disinfectants and antibacterial products. While effective, over-sanitising can disrupt the natural balance of microbes in your environment—and even weaken your immune response over time.

Tip: Use antibacterial sprays where they’re most needed (like kitchens and bathrooms), but avoid overuse. Choose gentler, plant-based options and focus on regular cleaning over constant sterilising.

Wash what you can't see

Soft furnishings are often skipped in a spring clean, yet they absorb odours, dust, and allergens all year round. Now’s the time to refresh everything from your curtains to your sofa cushions.

Tip: Wash cushion covers, throws, and washable rugs. For upholstery, sprinkle baking soda, leave for 15 minutes, then vacuum for a natural deodoriser. Alternatively, use a white vinegar spray which will remove stubborn odours like pet urine or food spills in minutes!

Choose naturally scented products over synthetic fragrances

A clean home shouldn’t smell like chemicals. Many conventional air fresheners and cleaning products are heavily fragranced with synthetic perfumes and VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which can irritate sensitive lungs and linger long after you’ve finished cleaning.

Tip: Skip the synthetic sprays and choose products that are gently fragranced with essential oils. Miniml’s range is naturally infused with scents like zesty pink grapefruit, cooling mint, and fresh cucumber - so your home smells clean, not chemical.

Declutter your routine

With so many products available, it’s easy to fall into the “one product for every surface” trap. The truth? Most homes only need a few core, multi-purpose products to stay spotless.

Tip: Streamline your cupboard by keeping just one good bathroom cleaner, one surface spray, a glass cleaner, and a reliable laundry liquid. Bonus points if they’re refillable and biodegradable.

A healthier home is a happier one

Spring cleaning shouldn’t leave your home filled with chemical residue or bin bags full of plastic. With a few simple swaps, you can refresh your space in a way that’s better for your family, your home, and the planet. At Miniml, we’re proud to support homeowners in building routines that are safe, sustainable, and effective - no compromises needed!
