The most popular gardening songs on Spotify

We’re in the prime time of the growing season, and the blossoming rise in gardening as a hobby in 2021 is a trend that’s not going anywhere. Plus, with lockdown easing, some companies have reported a 400% increase in sales for garden furniture. And who wants nice furniture but a messy garden.

When the weather is enjoyable, nothing makes gardening better than a good playlist. When we’re in the zone, many of us like to listen to music which matches our mood. And when gardening, we often look for chilled, feel-good songs to help us while away the hours. In some cases, it’s even been found that plants can thrive and boost their immune system when listening to music which emits similar vibrations to those in nature.

With that in mind, we decided to analyse the 116,021 songs added to 1,000 gardening playlists on Spotify to find out which songs are the most popular sounds of gardening this year.

Top 30 most popular gardening songs - 2021

The magical, eclectic music of Fleetwood Mac seems to be gardeners favourite music to have in their ears, with Dreams appearing in more playlists than any other song, and five of the bands hits making the top 100.

The data shows that the majority of gardeners like to listen to chilled out classics like Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles, Africa by TOTO and Lovely Day by Bill Withers, to get into a tranquil state when in nature. A few modern hits made the list, with new songs by Harry Styles and The Weeknd beating legends like Joni Mitchell and Coldplay in the ranks.

The experts at Dobbies Garden Centres have shared with us some fascinating insights into how we can make the most of our gardens this season, along with some top tips on how we can all reap the benefits of being outdoors in nature.

Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies Garden Centres, explains: “Summer is a busy time in the garden, with plenty to do but equally lots to enjoy as nature puts on its best sensory display of the year, filling your garden with colour and fragrance. Add a relaxing, uplifting playlist to soundtrack your gardening time, and altogether it’s a fantastic time to be outside! Just a short amount of time spent in the garden taking in your surroundings can help alleviate stress, helping you to feel happier, calmer and more energised.

“The warmer months provide ample opportunity to plant your own herbs and vegetables, which can be greatly satisfying – as well as good for you. It’s also a great time for some garden wildlife spotting, where you can do your bit to protect the environment. Gardening is not only great for the mind, but it’s also brilliant for our physical health. Gardening is an excellent form of exercise – just 30 minutes each day can help you to stay fit and healthy, and you’ll soon start to feel the effects.”

Methodology

All results are based on Spotify data as of March 2021. Miller Homes searched for playlists named after common gardening phrases, which found 1,000 playlists. We then scraped this data and analysed it to find the most common songs across the playlists, and the most frequently featured artists.

You can see the full data set here.
