Take Me Home: The Most Popular Songs for Singing Around the House

Music in the home is a huge part of life – from hosting dinner parties (pre-Covid) to recreating Hugh Grant’s Love Actually dance when no one’s watching!

Whether you’re mowing the lawn, soaking in the bath, or ‘Hinching’ your home, we wanted to discover the most popular songs and artists that make up the ultimate soundtrack for the home.

We analysed over 1,000,000 songs from Spotify playlists named after the activities you get up to at home, including ‘vacuuming’, ‘ironing’, ‘bath’, ‘showering’ and more.

Here’s what we found.

The top 20 most popular songs for any household task are…

Hugely recent songs dominate the top ten with The Weeknd’s massively catchy ‘Blinding Lights’ securing the top spot, but there are plenty of other great tracks to sing along to – both happy and sad – as Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles, Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi, and Whitney Houston’s 80s classic I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) all feature in the top 10.

Top 10 most listened to artists in the home

There’s definitely a trend towards current artists, with the top 10 overwhelming favouring artists who’ve found fame in recent years, but legendary stalwarts Fleetwood Mac and ELO manage to make the top 10.

She’s still only 18 but Billie Eilish had the most songs across all of the playlists we analysed, while Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles complete the top three.

Methodology

All results are based on Spotify data as of 21 August 2020. We searched for playlists named after common household tasks and activities including: ‘gardening’, ‘painting’, ‘cleaning’, ‘ironing’, ‘washing the car’, ‘vacuuming’, ‘cooking’, ‘bath’, ‘shower’ and ‘working from home’. We then scraped the data and analysed it to find the most popular songs per category and the most frequently featured artists.
