Nestled neatly between London and the south coast, Crawley Down has become increasingly popular with London commuters during recent years but can trace its history all the way back to the Stone Age.
Just 18 miles north of Brighton, the town is popular with people who like to spend time at the coast and those who enjoy the convenience of being able to hop aboard a flight to the world’s major cities, as Gatwick airport is a 30-minute car journey away. In fact, Crawley Down provides excellent all-round transport links. Rail services to London Victoria run from nearby Three Bridges and East Grinstead stations, while the nearest junction of the M23 is just a couple of miles away.
After the end of World War II Crawley Down was designated as a new town by the Government and work began to develop the gaps between the villages of Crawley, Ifield and Three Bridges with the construction of semi-detached family homes and the introduction of industry needed to provide residents with employment.
Today, Crawley Down manages to maintain great provision for families, thanks to a vibrant town centre, complete with a 90-shop mall, and a traditional open-air market on Friday and Saturday. Bluewater shopping and leisure centre at Dartford is just 45 minutes away for those seeking more retail options.
There’s pretty much something for all ages in Crawley Down and entertainment comes in many guises. Popular parks, featuring ornamental gardens and landscaped lawns make the town a popular destination for young and old alike. There’s also a multi-screen cinema and the Hawth Theatre in Crawley Down. The auditorium attracts productions from London’s West End, in addition to professional drama, comedy and touring musicians.
Rolling hills and open countryside are conveniently close to the town, whose residents have ready access to the 18-hole municipal golf course at Tilgate Forest, a scenic course that is rated as one of the best municipal courses in the country. This sits within 400 acres of what was once part of the Tilgate Estate, full of trees, shrubs and natural beauty.
Education and health amenities rank highly on many family priority lists. With Crawley Down home to many well-performing primary and secondary schools and more than its share of NHS dentists, GP surgeries and nearby hospitals, it ticks another important box with many house hunters.
