Known as ‘the canal capital of Scotland’, Kirkintilloch is a bustling, picturesque town with the perfect mix of local history, contemporary attractions and easy city access. Previously the area was a fort on the Antonine Wall, meaning there’s plenty of Roman heritage to explore while strolling along the Forth And Clyde Canal, which passes through the town centre.
Beyond the waterways, there are lots of great transport links to the town, making it a popular spot for commuters. Lenzie railway station serves the area, taking passengers to Glasgow in under 15 minutes. Infrastructure investments on the road have given Kirkintilloch fantastic access to the M80, with Glasgow under 20 minutes away and reaching Stirling in just over half an hour by car.
Up until 1967, Kirkintilloch was a “dry town”, but now there are plenty of contemporary pubs, bars and restaurants to enjoy. Walking along the main street, you’ll find everything from quaint cafes to classic steakhouses and even specialist dessert parlours, satisfying every taste. For home-cooked meals, there are a number of family-favourite supermarkets in the area, as well as convenience stores for stocking up on the essentials.
Action-packed weekends can be spent at one of the numerous sports facilities, including Kirkintilloch skate park, Kirkintilloch leisure centre, Kirkintilloch golf club or even at the bowling alley. There’s a busy schedule of local community events for all ages, ranging from movie nights at Lux, to the annual Kirkintilloch Canal Festival.
A number of great schools make the town popular for growing families, including Kirkintilloch High School, with a campus from New College Lanarkshire also in the area
