The Royal History

Once the birthplace of Ovaltine, the comfort of the warm malt drink still remains in the atmosphere of the pretty village of Kings Langley.

The historic village was once home to the Plantagenet kings of England, favoured by royalty for its abundance of deer and dense forest. Kings Langley Palace was originally the family home of Queen Eleanor of Castile and King Edward I in approximately 1277. It is believed when King Edward II came to inherit the Estate, he kept a menagerie including a lion and a camel.

Whilst very little remains of the palace today, the importance of Kings Langley is recorded in many works of literature such as the palace gardens mentioned in Shakespeare’s Richard II and author of The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer, is also thought to have visited the village.

The ancient monument site is now part of a popular walking trail for locals, beginning at Langley Common and following the River Gade, which flows through the village separating it into two government districts, before joining the Grand Union Canal.
