Home Gym Inspiration with The Kilted Coaches

We all know that exercise is important to our overall wellbeing, with regular workouts shown to benefit not only our physical health but our mental health too.

But trying to fit regular workouts into daily family life can be difficult, with motivation to go to the gym lacking, especially on dark and chilly winter nights.

The ideal solution? Use the flexibility your Miller home offers you to create an area for you to work out. It could be using your breakfast bar as a ballet barre, your garage into a gym or your study into a yoga space. We’ve spoken to Scottish fitness experts The Kilted Coaches, to bring you their top tips on creating a wellness space at home.

The Kilted Coaches are Stephen Clarke and Rab Shields: exercise, nutrition and mindset coaches from Perth who are known for their energetic, tartan-clad workout routines and attitude to leading healthy, happy, well-balanced lives.

Both of the Coaches have created wellness spaces in their own homes, with Stephen choosing a space suited to stretching, martial arts and meditation, and Rab opting for a room to suit cardio and resistance-based training. Here they give us their advice on how to create your very own wellness space in your Miller Home…

Choose your room wisely

“Any room can be used as a home gym or wellness space; you just need enough space to lie on the floor and do a ‘snow angel’ movement. The size of the room will dictate how much equipment you can have, and the variation of exercises you can do. We wanted to be able to work out without disturbing our families, so the garage was the right choice for us, but you can pick any space in your home that works for your needs.”

Think about your requirements

“Don’t try and do too much to the space; instead, be economical and clever about it. Think about what you want from the space and how you will use it; do you enjoy doing stretches, yoga, or meditation, or do you prefer cardio-based workouts or resistance training? Plan out the space to suit how you like to work out, make it ‘yours’, and you’ll be more likely to spend your time there.”

The key kit for beginners…

“Kettlebells are a great place to start; you can use them for cardio and working the core, and they double up as dumbbells. An exercise ball is also good, as there are lots of exercises you can do with them. Cardio equipment is great for beginners, as it takes the guesswork out of exercising. A stationary bike, a cross trainer or even a rowing machine are perfect if you have the space. Add a mirror, to help you check your form, an exercise or yoga mat, and a Bluetooth speaker, for listening to music or podcasts to motivate your workout.”

… and for more experienced gym-goers:

“For the more experienced, we’d recommend all of the above, and adding in a set of adjustable dumbbells, which allow you to work out with a large range of weights, compacted into one dumbbell – it’s a great space-saver.”

“A home gym makes it much easier to work out regularly. Fitting workouts into your day is easier, as it eliminates travel time from the equation. You can literally roll out of bed and into the gym, and you never have to worry about remembering your towel for the shower afterwards! To make sure that you use your fitness space regularly, we’d recommend setting a solid goal, and asking yourself what that goal means to you. Whether it’s weight loss, improved strength or flexibility, or simply having a ‘fit for purpose’ approach to life, knowing why the goal means so much to you reduces the likelihood of you staying on the sofa.”
