Sustainable Interior Design Inspiration For Your Home

Sustainable Interior Design Inspiration For Your Home

In the current climate, people are becoming more and more eco-conscious and here at Miller Homes, we’ve been thinking about how that can be translated into the interior design of your home.

There are a whole host of ways you can decorate your home sustainably and it will still look Pinterest-worthy.  Not only are eco-friendly interiors a great move, you’ll also have so much fun creating a unique look for your home.

Bring the outside in

Introducing house plants into your home is a great way to promote stress relief and boost your mood.  Studies have even found that they can improve concentration and productivity by 15%.  Plants are also great inexpensive decorations and can dress up any space. More importantly, house plants are perfect natural air purifiers – absorbing toxins and producing oxygen.  Air-purifying plants include the Spider Plant, Aloe Vera, Weeping Fig and Snake Plant.  There’s no need to spend on an air-purifying system, just get back to nature with a house plant!

Shopping on your doorstep

Whether you’re re-decorating or moving into a brand new home, why not consider shopping locally?  Supporting your local independent business means you can cut down on the transportation costs that are involved in ordering online – reducing the distance between the producer and consumer.  Shopping locally also means you can discover unique pieces that you wouldn’t necessarily find in chain stores.

Upcycle and transform

When it comes to upcycling, there are a wealth of environmental benefits, from reducing the need for new raw materials, saving materials from going to landfill and furthermore, reducing what goes to landfill.  For example, if you have a chest of drawers that are looking a little tired, why not give it a lick of paint and give it a whole new lease of life?  Some companies even offer a service for reclaiming their materials, so that is certainly something to look out for.   We live in a very fast-paced world when it comes to consumer habits but take a moment to consider what you already have in your home.  Alternatively, perhaps you could shop with a local business that sells upcycled products – an idea that benefits both the environment and your local economy.

Built to last

If you’re starting from scratch with your furniture, be mindful of the type of materials you buy – opt for products that are built to last, so that in time you can upcycle or sell on.  Investing in good quality furniture means you’ll always have ready-made furniture for a house move or if you have children, they’ll have furniture to take with them, when they fly the nest.  More importantly, investing in high-quality furnishings, means less spending in the future.
